Northwood Elementary is a beautiful IB school tucked off W Lexington Avenue in High Point. Liz Samuels has been working with the Student Support Team and Leadership Team at the school for many years. She has an extensive background in education, both in the classroom and as a curriculum facilitator.

The quarterly PBIS parties and Field Day are great opportunities for the students, staff and parents to enjoy each other and have fun. IB Night, Title 1 Night and Open House are packed with parents learning more about their student's activities and grade level curriculum.

GO FAR (Go Out For A Run) is an after school program to promote fitness. Students participate in 5k runs in the fall and spring.

Leadership Club meets bi-weekly in the spring. It is a series of sessions designed to introduce students in upper grades to qualities they need to foster in order to be good leaders. They are introduced to leaders in the community and hear valuable advice to help them grow in their own path to leadership.

A group of 5th graders make up the CIS Book Club which meets weekly during second semester. They nurture their love of reading. The books Mrs. Samuels chooses that are instrumental in molding the lives of young people.

CIS sponsors many opportunities for praise and recognition for our students making good choices in school.  We have a Scholar and a Student of the Month (48 students recognized each month) from each classroom who is honored for good citizenship and academic success.  We celebrate students each month who have perfect attendance with a fun Run the Halls through the school building with all the classes cheering them on! CIS also has Lunch Bunches and incentives for students who are improving their attendance and punctuality. Each quarter 4th and 5th graders (6 guys and 6 girls from each grade level) are awarded certificates and shirts for being named a Girl with Pearls or a Guy with Ties for being the perfect role models for all our students.  They are treated to a big celebration and field trip to HPU at the end of the school year when all 48 of them have been recognized and are featured in the High Point Enterprise.

Current Needs:

  • incentives - to be distributed to promote student attendance, good behavior and improved academics

  • teacher and staff appreciation - teachers work so hard all day long. It's nice to reward them with coffee and doughnuts, a warm lunch in the winter, gift cards for birthdays and special occasions.

  • speakers - to talk to grade levels about careers and community service

  • reading buddies - to read to classes or with individual students on a regular basis

  • breakfast or lunch buddies - to share some time together with a student weekly
