High Point Communities in Schools Names New Executive Director
HIGH POINT, NC – Following a nationwide search, High Point Communities in Schools
(CIS) announces it has named a new Executive Director. Tommy Walls Jr. assumed the post on August 5, 2019.
A seven-member search committee comprised of CIS board members and community supporters was led by CIS Board members Lee Kemp and Ed Bowling. Walls comes to High Point CIS from the Greater Charlotte Boys & Girls Clubs, where he has been Chief Operating Officer and Director of Operations since January. Prior to
coming to North Carolina, he was Assistant Vice President of Operations and Senior/ Director of Operations for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Madison, Wisconsin, for nearly two years. He also held positions including Director of Program Services/Chief Program Officer for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Champaign, Ill., for two years.
“Tommy is a focused and energetic advocate for children and teenagers, growing up in the Greater Milwaukee Boys & Girls Club of America and being named Midwest Regional Youth of the Year by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America,” said Kemp, the CIS Board Chair during the search. “He’s an innovative leader with great ideas about new ways to serve our students and community.”
Walls, who earned a Bachelor of Arts in Social Welfare and Justice from Marquette University, and a Masters of Social Work in Advocacy Leadership & Social Change/Human Services Development from the University of Illinois, said:

As an Alumna of Bennett College, Lanetta earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology
with a Minor in Chemistry, Master of Arts in Special Education, Master of Arts in Early
Childhood Education and is a Doctoral Candidate for Walden University in Education.
Entering her 15th year in the field of education, she has experience working with first-
generation, low socioeconomic students and their families in Guildford County. Lanetta has
earned her certifications as a Certified Communities In Schools Site Coordinator, and a Certified
Communities In Schools Motivational Speaker, and Licensed Middle School Science Teacher as well
as mental health and first aid trainings.
She started working with Communities In Schools of High Point, NC, as a site coordinator and in
this role, she focused efforts on building organizational strategies and practices to improve
program quality. She then became the Case Manager serving her team to establish a processes and
protocol, which aided consistent communication flow, greater use of technology, and efficient
practices, which improved the quality of services. She currently serves as the Director of
Programs and Operations ensuring that students and families needs are being met, managing CIS National and State deliverables, case management data compile reporting, supervise and train CIS coordinators through evidenced best practices.
Catherine is a recognized High Point community leader for more than 25 years with a passion for
improving the lives of children and families. She has held various titles in her almost 10 years serving CIS
connecting the Greater High Point community to CIS needs. Her strengths center around networking,
creating, retaining, and growing partnerships with churches, businesses, high schools, and universities.
She helps Site Coordinators develop community partnerships and volunteer programs at each school.
She is an experienced public speaker able to share enthusiasm for organizational missions and goals
encouraging community members to take action. Catherine works with the community to connect
resources to the CIS organization through fundraising events like Dancing with the High Point Stars and
the Bill Horney Memorial Community Picnic.
She is also an active leader with other community organizations: Kiwanis Club of High Point, Board Member and Terrific Kids Award Program Coordinator; Good Friends of High Point, Founding Board Member and
Current Board Member; Wesley Memorial UMC, Fairview Elementary Partnership Chair.
She has also enjoyed 12 years of leadership with the Junior League of High Point, volunteering with Family Service
and working on United Way campaigns.
Prior to becoming an employee of CIS, Catherine was a CIS volunteer at High Point Central. Her careers
in advertising and sales allowed her time to engage in meaningful volunteering. She graduated from
Elon University with a BA in Corporate Communications. Each year Catherine continues to volunteer as a
mentor and reading buddy in the CIS program. Last year her daughter was old enough to join her in
volunteering as a high school breakfast buddy. Her daughter, son, husband, and church are all engaged
in partnerships with CIS. Her love for volunteering and serving the High Point community shines through
her work and family.
As the Executive Assistant and Finance Manager for Communities In Schools of High Point, Inc., Leronda
brings over 25 years of finance, banking, and management experience to the table.
After approximately one year with the company, she began transitioning financial operations and
many other duties from manual to electronic tasks. Her areas of expertise include problem solving, conflict resolutions and finance. Strong relationships are important to her, both professionally and personally.
She has called High Point, NC home for the past 16 years, but she was born in Fort Knox Kentucky and
reared in Camden, South Carolina. She is a graduate from South Carolina State University. She has
worked for First Union Bank, Lincoln Financial (formerly Jefferson Pilot), Bank of America, and Liberty
Currently, Leronda is excited to hold a position in the nonprofit world as she continues to grow her
professional skills, gain experience in finance management and reporting, and continue to strive for
excellence under the CISHP.
